The Role

We are looking for an experienced Principal Civil Engineer to join our growing engineering team in Birmingham. If you are a committed and ambitious engineer who can demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills combined with commercial awareness and the ability to play a part in growing a dynamic high performance team then we want to hear from you.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering technically sound design solutions, including all associated reporting and cost estimating, to programme and within budget, with duties including:

  • Delivery of all the specified project outcomes on time, within budget and to the client’s specifications
  • Ensuring project requirements are fully met
  • Identifying and delivering solutions
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant technical standards
  • Management and development of teams of engineers
  • Planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources and finances.
  • Conceptual outline and detailed design of engineering solutions, presentation of engineering options.
  • Preparation, checking and/or approval of feasibility studies, outline and detailed design technical reports and other written documents.
  • Production and approval of design concepts, drawings, specifications and other technical documents.
  • Establishment of internal design standards and/or processes to achieve a continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.
  • Prepare and check engineering designs, calculations, and oversee production
  • Prepare and check contract documents and scheme cost estimates
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations
  • Develop strong client relationships

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • BEng/MEng degree in Civil Engineering (or similar)
  • Professionally Qualified Chartered (CEng) Engineer
  • Experienced based skills in civil engineering within major infrastructure projects
  • A thorough understanding of multi-disciplinary co-ordination across major infrastructure projects and global design teams.
  • Previous experience supervising junior team members
  • Experience in the design and checking of concrete, composite, steel and other bridge forms, earthworks and drainage.
  • The ability to work unsupervised; be competent to check and approve the work of others and to sign off design certificates on behalf of the company
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experience in the use of civil / structural software design packages
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to produce Engineering designs and associated reports.
  • Previous experience working with, Eurocodes, British Standards, Technical Specification for Interoperability, Railway Standards and knowledge of guidance available from industry research bodies such as CIRIA, Concrete Council etc
  • Experience of Prevention through Engineering Design including Designers responsibilities under CDM
  • Engineering design production utilising BIM
  • Working knowledge of Autocad and Bentley Systems tools (Microstation, Projectwise, eB etc.)
  • Working knowledge of all PC based Windows environments and Microsoft Office suite

Experience in the following would be an advantage:

  • platforms, drainage, earthworks, underground structures, station building structures, foundations, structural steelwork, masonry and cladding
  • Experience in BIM related software platforms e.g. in a Bentley Systems software environment
  • Experience or interested in working with international colleagues of different technical cultures or on overseas projects
