Sustainable Development Assessment & Solutions
SYSTRA are experts in sustainable design, construction and management. We seek to provide solutions which consider life-cycle thinking and take a truly multi-disciplinary approach to tackling the risks and opportunities presented by a global decline in natural capital, the rising costs of non-renewable resources and the impacts of climate change. We provide sustainable solutions throughout the lifecycle of a project: planning, implementation, operation/management and end-of-life.
BREEAM and CEEQUAL assessments
BREEAM and CEEQUAL are the world’s leading sustainability assessment methods for buildings and infrastructure projects, providing widely recognised third party certification of an asset’s environmental, social and economic sustainability performance. SYSTRA’s qualified and licensed BREEAM and CEEQUAL Assessors have extensive experience in supporting project teams through every step of the assessment process, from pre-assessment optioneering through to final post-construction certification. We have acted as assessors and advisors on a number of complex, multidisciplinary schemes including Crossrail, HS2 and landmark energy recovery facilities including the award winning Suffolk Energy from Waste Facility (BREEAM Outstanding) and the Leeds Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility (BREEAM and CEEQUAL Excellent).
Through regular meetings and workshops, we provide professional BREEAM services to assist clients in meeting their sustainability aspirations and wider project objectives and targets. We have the experience and expertise to help you develop the right strategy for your project; one which maximises sustainable performance, identifies any opportunities to innovate and reduces risk. Our Assessors will work with you to understand your needs, make the process as easy as possible and ensure compliance with BREEAM standards.
Carbon Footprint Assessment and Reporting
SYSTRA understand the importance of undertaking carbon assessments to the highest quality to understand and reduce the carbon and resource impacts of our projects and ultimately reduce our impacts on climate change in line with client, industry and global targets and objectives.
SYSTRA are recognised as industry leaders in carbon assessments and reporting using the RSSBs Rail Carbon Tool. We have applied the RCT successfully on projects such as Oxford Station and Plumstead Depot to build baseline carbon assessments and are the RSSBs sole provider of training on how to use the tool to delegates across the UK. We use the principles of the PAS 2080 Carbon Management in Infrastructure Standard to form a robust methodology for the assessment and subsequent report. This aids the project in assessing the baseline carbon footprint and proposing and implementing carbon reducing solutions through design, construction, operation and decommissioning through engagement and collaboration with the project design and management teams.
Maximising the use of renewed, re-used and recycled materials and reducing waste to landfill is a key area of focus on every project SYSTRA undertake.
We fully apply the principles of the waste management hierarchy and work with the design and project teams collaboratively to design out waste where possible and make excavations as lean as possible. We are experienced in producing detailed Site Waste and Materials Management Plans which document anticipated waste streams and specify how landfill will be avoided as an ultimate disposal route.
Where required we will liaise with the Environment Agency to try and identify suitable receptors of excavated material waste as demonstrated by our work at Hayes and Harlington platform extension where 140m3 of waste from excavations on site was re-used as landscaping at a local golf course.
Environmental Management Systems
SYSTRA have a strong Integrated Environmental Management System covering requirements of ISO14001, ISO9001, ISO45001 and RISQS standards. The EMS system is designed to deliver high quality services to control and monitor our environmental and 3S (Health, Safety and Security) performance. Our EMS is fully implemented into our business activities and operations by using tools such as the Network Rail Sustainability Charter and the Business Policy Manual. to ensure the accreditation is attained. SYSTRA recognise that conducting out business activities will give rise to a range of environmental impacts which must be identified, evaluated and reduced wherever possible. We aim to maximise protection of the environment, avoiding pollution and promoting opportunities for biodiversity enhancement
ISO:14001 2015 Implementation
Our certification to the ISO14001:2015 demonstrates our commitment to continuous improvement in accordance to the requirements of the standard. The EMS Co-ordinator is responsible for providing expert advice to the Head of Compliance and Governance to ensure the ISO14001 accreditation is retained.
We provide environmental guidance for all colleagues to promote the understanding of the company’s environmental policy, objectives, initiatives and programmes and their role within them.
IEMA and CIWM Approved Training Course Provision
SYSTRA is a certified provider of IEMA Environmental Management and CIWM courses. We provide a range of courses covering Environmental Auditing, implementing Environmental Management Systems, Sustainability and Waste management.
Our trainers, who are all practicing consultants, have over 60 years combined knowledge and experience in Environmental, Ecological and Sustainability issues. We aim for the highest standards in knowledge transfer, allowing delegates to interact and engage in a welcoming and professional learning environment, ensuring that you gain the most from the time you spend with us.
Site Environmental Audits
SYSTRA has several fully qualified auditors who have experience undertaking audits in both office and operational environments including manufacturing, industrial and construction sites. We use our diligence and knowledge to review processes in place on site to identify areas of best practice and any areas for improvement through liaison with the site team. Findings of site audits are documented in Audit Reports which are issued to the site team confirming any requirement for corrective actions with responsible persons detailed.
When working as principle contractor on the Crossrail Project SYSTRA received STAR awards for site management for the platform extension works at Hayes and Harlington, Langley and West Drayton stations. This award covered site operations, health and safety and environmental performance on site.
Sustainability Workshops and Action Plan Delivery
Maximising sustainable performance on every project is a key objective for SYSTRA.
Sustainability Audits and Reporting
We have a track record of undertaking Sustainability Workshops on projects right through from GRIP 2 to 6 on high profile projects such as Reading to Oxford Capacity Enhancements, Doncaster Station and East Coast Mainline Power Supply Upgrade. Workshops are attended by key decision makers within the project such as members of the design, management and client teams. Our aim in the SYSTRA Environment and Sustainability team is to facilitate the discussions, drawing on applicable targets and objectives as well as best and exemplar practice examples from industry leading projects as well as sustainability assessment methods such as BREEAM and CEEQUAL to identify sustainable solutions already implemented on the project and propose any additional solutions which could be applied. After the workshop has been completed the outcomes are documented in a Sustainable Design Action Plan. This report confirms the discussions that took place in the workshop and assigns actions with responsible parties and timescales for implementation for any further work required. This process ensures that sustainable performance on the project is truly maximised through design, construction, operation and decommissioning with recommendations of the SDAP incorporated into any subsequent Design or Construction Environment and Social Management Plans.
