Landscape Architecture

We are an integrated team of Landscape Architects who work with a range of clients to deliver a professional service and develop the best solution to the project challenge. We offer a wide range of complementary consultancy and design services to ensure that your project achieves the best design in its environment with minimised adverse impacts. We work alongside engineers and other environmental specialists in multi-disciplinary teams. Our enthusiastic and collaborative team includes Chartered Members of the Landscape Institute. We can provide landscape and visual assessment, landscape design, co-ordination and landscape design services for highways and transportation, infrastructure and technology projects.

Our team can provide landscape consultancy input at all stages of the project life cycle to ensure that all the landscape and environmental aspects of a project are taken into account and incorporated into an iterative design process.
We can provide fully integrated services relating to all aspects of landscape architecture, throughout the entirety of a project.
Our teams experience includes major infrastructure / transport projects, public realm and shared space design.

Services include:

Environmental and habitat design
We can utilise our dual skills to undertake wholistic environmental and habitat designs which bring together environmental mitigation and enhancement solutions applicable to a range of sectors.  We can create appropriate and bespoke designs and strategies for terrestrial and aquatic habitats, public open space, wetlands, rivers and water courses, ponds, landscape mitigation, landscape enhancement and landscape restoration.   

Expert witness at public enquiry and development consent orders
Our team includes Chartered Members of the Landscape Institute who have substantive experience of undertaking and reviewing LVIA as part of EIA. We are also experienced in preparing Landscape and Visual Appraisals in support of planning applications for a wide range of project types.

Graphic design and visualisation
We have in house in graphic design and visualisation capability which utilise and apply to any project.  We have experience with a wide range of the latest 2d and 3d software to produce 2d drawings and 3d models (in particular BIM models using Revit and Bentley Software).  We can produce hand drawn illustrations and sketches as well as photomontages. 

SYSTRA has full BIM capability and sits at a BIM  Level 2 status. 

Initial site survey and assessment
Using a combination of desktop study and on-site analysis we can provide and create detailed and comprehensive initial site surveys and assessments for a wide variety of project types. We have in house drone survey capability which can be utilized.   We can truly provide an integrated and wholistic service for initial site survey and assessment as members of our team are dual qualified across Landscape Architecture, Ecology, Environmental Consultancy and Arboriculture.  So, for example, we can integrate Phase 1 habitat surveys with initial landscape site surveys for Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments. 

Landscape design for all stages of the design process
SYSTRA can provide the full range of landscape design services as defined within the Landscape Consultants Appointment (June 2018 edition produced by the Landscape Institute):
S1:  Landscape Design and Administration/Post-contract Services:  Strategic Definition, Preparation and Brief, Concept Design, Developed Design, Technical Design, Construction, Handover and Close and In Use analysis.
In addition we can provide site supervision services for the implementation and construction of the landscape/environmental elements of projects.  These services include the provision of the roles of Environmental Clerk of Works, Landscape Clerk of Works and undertaking maintenance inspections. 
If required we can produce landscape maintenance and management plans for any project. 
Our approach and service is flexible and can be adapted to any form of Contract including NCE and RIBA. 

Landscape planning services
Our team has the capability and experience to produce a range of landscape planning services including production of Design and Access Statements, Green Infrastructure Strategies, Sensitivity and Capacity Studies, Pre-planning landscape and visual feasibility studies, LVIA Audit. The team can also undertake the role of EIA Co-ordination for the production of Environmental Appraisals and Statements. 

We can also provide comprehensive services in relation to negotiations with planning authorities/statutory environmental bodies and provision of landscape advice to discharge planning conditions for developments. 

Landscape and visual impact assessment for environmental statements and appraisals

Masterplanning
We work at all scales to help plan places, transform streets, towns, cities, rural locations and regions by planning, understanding, influencing and promoting transport solutions that enhance the places in which people live, work and visit.  We can create development masterplans and landscape masterplans for projects and developments across a variety of sectors including Rail, Highways, Residential, Commercial and Industrial. By integrating masterplanning with an overarching transport strategy we are able to ensure that new development is sustainably integrated into the surroundings and therefore placed in a better position to gain planning approval.  We work from initial site selection and representation stages through to detailed planning application submission. 

Public consultation and stakeholder engagement
We can use our experience and skills to prepare, co-ordinate/facilitate and undertake public consultation and stakeholder engagement on any project, including  all the production of all supporting information such as drawings, visualisations, sketches and other explanatory material. Many of the team have had first hand experience of working directly within a local authority and public sector organisation on secondment or as the client on a given project. We can adapt and tailor our services to work with a wide range of public and stakeholder groups including individuals, community groups, schools, local authorities, statutory organisations (for example the Environment Agency or Highways England), charities and trusts. 

Urban design
SYSTRA believe that urban design (including public realm) are key to developing places which support economic growth and regeneration whilst making places more desirable to live, work and visit. We have a vast experience of using an urban design led approach to developed strategies that are ambitious yet at the same time deliverable and evidence based. Our approach to urban design often integrates public consultation and stakeholder engagement, public realm strategies, public transport routing and traffic management advice. We are an innovative market leader in the delivery of cycling based projects, working with a diverse range of public and private sector clients. Over the past several years, we have delivered a wide range of cycling-related projects, from high-level strategies outlining “quick wins” for planned cycling corridors, through to detailed design of cycle routes and post-implementation monitoring. 

Throughout this work, we ensure a joined-up approach, also considering impacts on the pedestrian experience, the road network and the general urban realm, conducting research into cycle route and cycle parking best practice, as well as working with the stakeholders to understand mode shift potential and assisting the public in making the transition out of their cars.
