Scottish Government Tackling the School Run
As part of a package of measures announced in June 2015 to address climate change, the Scottish Government indicated its intention to revise policy towards ’Tackling the School Run’.
To assist with this work, the Scottish Government has commissioned SYSTRA to undertake research to gather the latest evidence on school transport choices and approaches which have been most effective in influencing school travel choices.
The study will involve a desktop review of policy, school travel initiatives taking place in Scotland and from UK and international best practice. This will be supplemented by engagement with stakeholders such as local authorities and cycling and walking organisations, to give a wide perspective to the study.
Case studies will also be undertaken with a number of primary and secondary schools across Scotland. These will involve interviews with head teachers as well as consultation with pupils and parents, to further explore factors influencing school travel choices.
The research is due to report in the summer. The outputs will inform future policy making in this area, with a view to reducing traffic emissions and traffic congestion and encouraging active and healthier lifestyles of school pupils in Scotland.
