Funded by Lancashire County Council, Network Rail had aspirations to construct a new railway station to service Buckshaw Village on the Manchester to Preston line, on the site of the former Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF Chorley).

Project Brief

Designed by SYSTRA, the station consists of two platforms, a station building, footbridge and lifts with associated car parking and access. The station opened for passenger service on 03 October 2011 at a total cost of £6.8 Million.

Project Scope & Delivery

Detailed Design (GRIP5) for Design and Build Contractor, Volker Fitzpatrick, of a completely new rail station on a brown field site comprising of:

  • Topographical survey and buried services searches.
  • Site excavation cut and fill strategy and ground improvement.
  • Single storey Station Building with ticket office, waiting areas, toilets, retail, plant rooms and external servicing areas.
  • 2No. 150 metre length platforms – cross wall and plank construction on reinforced concrete slab foundations c/w lighting, telecoms services, drainage, emergency evacuation, signage and passenger waiting shelters.
  • LM-type steel station footbridge with stairs and lifts on reinforced concrete piled foundations.
  • 200 space car park with provision for disabled, motorcycles and cycle storage c/w lighting, drainage (bypass separator and discharge), white lining, signage, boundary fencing and security.
  • Station forecourt area and access roadworks with waiting areas for buses, taxis and drop off including bus shelters. A mini roundabout with associated white lining signage and vehicular tracking.


Juggling the needs of a Design & Build Contractor requiring immediate design deliverables for construction to meet tight project timescales with the need to provide the overall Client (Network Rail) with a high level of design detail for approval purposes. In order to overcome this, regular project meetings were undertaken with the Volker Fitzpatrick) and Network Rail to understand requirements and priorities. A staged design delivery with separate submissions was utilised to suit construction timeframe for:

  • Early Works (site clearance, excavation, cut & fill).
  • Foundations (piles and slabs).
  • Platform construction
  • Footbridge and lifts.
  • Station building.

The brownfield former industrial site with soft ground conditions required geotechnical assessments, ground improvement to prevent excessive settlement and analysis for foundations design.
