Global Day of the Engineer – Interview with Mircea Androne

Today is the Global Day of the Engineer, a day that celebrates engineers all over the world.

We spoke with Mircea Androne, Senior Track Designer from our Reading office, about his experience of being an engineer and how projects delivered by SYSTRA impacted our local communities and the wider regions.

Tell us about your role at SYSTRA and your experience of being an engineer
My role within SYSTRA involves solving complex problems and creating innovative solutions. Engineering is a progress ladder that requires skill, devotion and creativity. SYSTRA provides a great platform for me to nurture and improve these skills, through collaborative inter-disciplinary effort and extensive technical expertise.

What’s been the most rewarding engineering project that you’ve worked on while being at SYSTRA?
The Transpennine Route Upgrade Programme. It’s been amazing and very challenging at times to see this project grow into a coherent design. We managed to overcome many issues and deliver the project to a high standard.

What impact do you see our projects having in local communities and nationwide?
I am fortunate to have worked on major infrastructure projects which benefit the local and national communities. I have helped to develop local stations, route modernisations as well as intricate small challenges.

What would you say to anyone thinking about becoming an engineer?
It’s a challenging and rewarding career path that requires creativity, attention to detail, problem solving and teamworking skills, ability to work under pressure, commercial awareness and the list could go on. But the end result is immensely satisfying to develop and even better to see when it is constructed and operating.

In 3 words, how would you describe working at SYSTRA?
Teamwork. Success Passion.
