What is your job title and department?
I am a Senior Technician within the MET & Building Services team.
2. Why did you decide to pursue an apprenticeship at SYSTRA?
I decided to pursue an apprenticeship in engineering because of my interest in Science and Design Technology at school. At the time I spoke to my careers advisor and they suggested looking into design engineering apprenticeships. I already had family members working in the industry but had never thought about doing this kind of work myself. However, after a few conversations with different people, I decided to apply to work at SYSTRA.
3. What is the best part of your apprenticeship?
The best part of my apprenticeship is having the opportunity to design within the industry and watch the projects I’ve worked on come to life. I’ve also had the opportunity to meet and work with so many great people, including local school children who we regularly visit and encourage to look into STEM careers.
4. What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships have so many benefits, but you shouldn’t underestimate the challenges that come with them. It can be difficult to manage a full-time job alongside part-time education. However, you can definitely do it if you put your mind to it.
Apprenticeships allow you to gain valuable knowledge and qualifications, and you will also get the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals who will happily share information with you. I’d suggest that you ask lots of questions. Make sure you speak to and work with as many different people as possible because you can learn so much from every different individual in the industry.
5. What project(s) are you working on currently and how are you going to #BuildTheFuture?
I’m currently designing street lighting for multiple locations around Warwickshire and The West Midlands which will be affected by the HS2 Project. This work includes developing lighting designs for new and existing roads, residential streets, roundabouts and smart motorways which will be constructed or realigned as part of the HS2 works. The work I’m doing will definitely have a positive impact in the future.
6. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I like to travel and go on holiday whenever I get the chance. I also like running for my local athletics club and spending time with my friends.
