Langley Station Platform Extension
TSP Projects were engaged as Principal Contractor to carry out the GRIP 5-8 works for a 90 metre extension of Platform 1 at Langley Station. The site had limited access, with only a footbridge and walkway to the existing platform which was located on an embankment. The station is on the very busy Paddington to Reading line, with trains passing the site every ten minutes at 125mph and with very limited possessions available for installation work.
To accommodate these site constraints we used our ‘Single Bay’ Modular System, set on a combination of shallow depth strip footings and low displacement piling. The use of the ‘Single Bay’ platform allowed the structure of the platform extension to be manhandled into position and installed in the daytime during fenced green zone working and so Road Rail Vehicles were only used for the installation of screw piles. TSP Projects identified an area within an adjacent business park for a temporary access ramp and storage area and this access was used for this worksite but also other Crossrail platforms TSP Projects were undertaking.
The scope of works also included a 210 square metre temporary timber platform raising with anti-slip covering, including copers and tactiles adhered to plywood sheeting. This platform was designed, procured, installed and handed back to First Great Western within one month and included working through the Christmas holiday break.
This project is another example how working closely with client, stakeholders and in consultation with local residents and the Environment Agency on the design and installation, TSP Projects can provide innovative and cost effective solutions tailored to the specific to the needs of a site. The project was awarded the prestigious Star Award for sites achieving a very high standard of Health, Safety and Environmental working practices. The excellent reputation of this project was further confirmed when Crossrail’s Project Director, George Mendosa, visited the site to express his gratitude to the team for a job well done!
