Isle of Man - St. John’s Urban Design
Outline Concept Designs
The aim of the project is to produce an outline concept design or series of outline concept designs to assist the Department in discussions with Ministers and local businesses about the future of St Johns.
St Johns is home to a number of nationally important Manx heritage destinations, which are separated from the main village and the newly refurbished heritage trail by the A1. Therefore the Department as part of its active travel and business support strategies wishes to improve linkages between various key sites with St Johns. The outline concept plan/s considered:
- The street/road scape of the A1 fronting Tynwald Hill to emphasise the sites national importance (i.e. place) and integrate links to key destinations in St Johns.
- Routes between key sites in St Johns, especially north and southbound routes from the Heritage Trail to locations north of the A1 (including Tynwald Mills)
- Landscape, highway layout and street/road scape appearance.
The key aim of the concept designs is to improve connections between the main heritage sites/destinations within St John’s, creating an active and attractive environment that provides a significantly improved experience to both the local community and visitors.
The concept designs and proposed ideas received eagerness and support from the minister and established the base to proceed to the detail design stage.
