The Challenge

Integra61 is a large mixed-use development located to the south of Bowburn, County Durham, adjacent to Junction 61 of the A1(M). Integra61 will create a major business hub and the proposals offer a significant opportunity to deliver a landmark development which will help drive forward economic growth across the North-East region and in particular County Durham, as well as providing new homes to meet identified local needs.

SYSTRA’s Role

SYSTRA has been involved in the project from the inception of the masterplan and has advised extensively on-site access, layout, land use, capacity etc.

SYSTRA provided traffic and transport advice to support a series of successful planning applications for the site assessing the impact of the proposed development on the local and strategic road networks. This has included extensive consultation with stakeholders including Durham County Council, Highways England and local residents.

SYSTRA identified mitigation works to the existing road network including at Junction 61 of the A1(M). SYSTRA led a successful bid to the Growth and Housing Fund to attain circa £2 million to upgrade the junction. This scheme has since been constructed with SYSTRA undertaking detailed design and construction support on behalf of Durham County Council.

SYSTRA has undertaken the preliminary and detailed design of the site access roundabouts and internal access roads. The design of both of these elements was undertaken in Civil 3D and AutoCAD in accordance with the appropriate DMRB standards.

Amazon has been confirmed as the first major occupier at the site, bringing 1000 jobs to County Durham.
