Crossrail Extension

Crossrail Extension

Project Scope and Delivery

SYSTRA acted as Principal Contractor for platform extensions at three stations for the Crossrail project. To support this, the Environment, Ecology and Sustainability team were responsible for managing the design and construction risks including:

  • Site environmental monitoring
  • Dust monitoring
  • Preparation of Section 61 and Highways consents
  • Post-construction replanting
  • Implementing a Green Travel Plan

SYSTRA’s Approach

SYSTRA’s plan was designed to minimise disruption to the surrounding neighbourhood and its residents, to control nuisance parking, and to help Crossrail meet its carbon reduction targets by encouraging more sustainable travel methods such as walking, cycling, use of public transport and vehicle sharing. We also encouraged people to avoid travel altogether by using teleconferencing, video conferencing, and other alternatives where possible.
Through effective engagement with staff and subcontractors, the targets we set out in the plan were substantially exceeded:

  • Single occupancy vehicle travel was reduced by 40% from the predicted levels pre-construction
  • 48% of all trips to site were made by sustainable travel modes
  • 50% of all management trips to site were made by sustainable travel modes
  • 52% of total time spent travelling to and from site was made using more sustainable methods of transport, helping reduce the impact on local air quality and reducing the contribution to climate change
